SRTM05 Files for France ====================== V1 (10/2024) ====================== These HGT files cover the complete territory of France - except la Corse which comes as its own. (Furthermore: The foreign islands not belonging to europe are omitted.) They have a resolution of approximately 10-15 meters per sample. Which means they each provide 7200 elevation samples per latitude/longitude degree. This is no regular specified format and an extension to SRTM3 and SRTM1 - let's call it SRTM05. The goal was to enhance the elevation profile for GPX tracks you get e.g. from navigation apps. An application that now supports this "SRTM05" format is RouteConverter (https://www.routeconverter.com). The source for the tiles comes from the french national service institute 'Portal Geoservices de la Republique Francaise': https://geoservices.ign.fr/rgealti#telechargement5m The DEM model they provide is derived from LIDAR data and is delivered as 5m resolution ASC files. Some tiles at the borders of france cover other countries (Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Belgium). The data for these tile parts comes from Sonnys DTM1" (Spain, Germany, Belgium) and DTM0.5" (Swizzerland) models, 10m GeoTiffs (Italy/Tinitaly) and from REGALTI for the french part - they were merged together after having upsampled them bicubic. (So the real resolution for the borders is not so accurate as the inner region.) Most of the conversion has been accomplished using Bluemarble Global Mapper (thanks to Sonny for several hints!) and its scripting capabilities along with a tool I programmed myself for correcting some errors and for merging the SRTM05 tiles.
